Group A: Health and Safety of the Child and the Well-Being of the Educator
Description
Group A consists of two competencies:
- FK1E: Ensure the child’s health and safety
- FK1G: Maintain physical and psychological integrity of the educator
This group is designed to help educators identify risks to children’s safety in the context of educational childcare services and intervene in everyday emergency situations and situations to ensure children’s health. This group also identifies and addresses intervention strategies to adopt to support children at risk of any cases of mistreatment and abuse, all the while maintaining and taking care of the educator’s physical and psychological well-being and integrity.
Evaluation Description
In order to obtain recognition for Group A (FK1E & FK1G), you will have to complete the evaluations listed below in the following order:
- Valid First Aid Card:In connection with the competency FK1E: Ensure the child’s health and safety you will have to present, prior to starting the RAC process a valid first aid card attesting to the successful completion of a first aid course adapted to the early childhood profession and in accordance with Quebec’s Educational Childcare Services regulations for members of the staff of an educational childcare service.
- Evaluation Booklet: Complete ONE evaluation booklet as you see it below in blue by downloading it. The evaluation booklet covers both competencies: FK1E and FK1G and is focused on responding to scenarios and practical questions relating to emergency interventions and situations of neglect, mistreatment and abuse. In addition to situations that educators need to take into account to ensure their own physical and psychological well-being.
- Interview: After successfully passing the evaluation booklet, you will be invited by the content specialist to participate in an interview (The interview can take place over the phone or online via Teams or Zoom). During the interview, you will be asked questions about certain elements from the evaluation booklet that you submitted to confirm its authenticity and, if necessary, clarification questions. In addition, you will need to refer to two different situations in which you have had to meet a child’s health needs. For each situation, you will need to: propose actions to be put in place to meet this health need. You will also need to identify signs of discomfort and symptoms of infectious diseases. You will be asked to explain how you keep children safe. In addition, based on your professional experience, you will be required to describe a situation that has generated stress or burnout. For each situation, you will need to:

- Describe the signs of emotional load, stress or burnout;
- Explain how to manage emotional reactions, reduce stress, or prevent burnout.
- Observation in the workplace: A Content Specialist will come to your daycare while you attend to the children’s hygiene, rest and feeding needs. Dinner or snack preparation time, dinner /or snack and nap preparation time are best times for observation. During the same period, the Content Specialist will also be observing the working postures adopted by you, including the techniques used for lifting children or heavy objects. If the techniques of lifting children or heavy objects could not be observed spontaneously on this occasion, you will be asked to demonstrate them after the observation. The observation specifically targets the following competencies and elements:
- FK1E-2 – Meet the child’s needs related to health (hygiene, comfort, illness) and well-being (rest, feeding).
- FK1G-1 – Adopt ergonomic working postures.
Evaluation Criteria of Group A as a whole:
- Proper checking of premises, materials, equipment
- Proper recording of information for incidents
- Relevance of the report: presence of key elements and clarity
- Implementation and accuracy of corrective measures for the incident
- Pertinence of strategies selected to ensure your well-being in the childcare service
